TOKAIDO
Katsushika Hokusai 1760? -1849
"Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji, Fuji of Kanaya, Tokaido" (1830-1832)
Collection: Yamanashi Prefectural Museum
This work depicts people crossing the Oi River at the Tokaido post station "Kanaya-juku" in the famous woodblock print collection "Thirty-six Views of Tomitake" by Ukiyo painter Katsushika Hokusai in the late Edo period. The river is rippling like the sea, but the appearance of Kawagoe's feet crossing a basket and large luggage on a piggyback while traveling is powerfully depicted.
Yamanashi Prefectural Museum: A museum that houses many materials related to Mt. Fuji, which was registered as a World Cultural Heritage site in 2013, and introduces its history and culture. In addition to Katsushika Hokusai's "Thirty-six Views of Tomitake," Hiroshige Utagawa's "Thirty-six Views of Fuji" are also in the collection.
